Title

A bungalow transformed into a bright and spacious modern home for a young family.

Salfra - Millbrook, Cornwall.
Refurbishment / Extension. Completed 2020.

Intro

A high-performance and highly functional open plan home is the result of much careful planning and teamwork on site. The existing roof is removed, and a new lightweight timber-frame upper storey is added. The majority of the ground floor walls remain, except for a significant portion of the existing (virtually window-less) southern elevation which is removed and extended upon. A generous interior now captures dramatic views south to AONB beyond, maximises natural light throughout the day, and flows out into the garden.

Testimonial

“From the outset Dig Architects listened carefully to what we wanted to achieve and provided excellent advice – a combination of vision and pragmatism”.

The ground floor accommodation consists of an office and sitting room to the North elevation, separated by the main entrance and generous corridor which merges into rooms; a staircase and utility + wc are located to the West; and to the South / East is a large L-shaped kitchen-diner with snug seating area. The kitchen island acts as a pivot, linking the dining / sitting / patio spaces; its outward orientation takes in the entire garden. Expansive glazing and doors surround the interior, allowing natural light to spill in while improving the home’s connection to its garden.

Upstairs four new bedrooms are created, one with walk-through wardrobe and en-suite, along with a family bathroom. The rooms are generous bright and airy spaces, well laid out, and private from one another; each room captures a special view.

Testimonial

“We were delighted with Dig Architects work on the project – supporting us throughout the whole project from early concept, through Planning, Construction and finishing stages”.

The design ‘works with’ the existing structure, to limit costs and time on site, and reduce the need for further (unnecessary) embodied carbon going into the building. The existing walls are overclad with an airtight membrane and high-performance insulation, then re rendered and left a natural grey. The new upper storey receives similar airtight and insulation treatment and is clad in western red cedar which will soften in colour and grey over time; the roof is natural slate. The improvements to the building’s fabric, combined with passive design strategies, significantly reduce running costs and improve comfort.

Testimonial

“We love our house and would thoroughly recommend Dig Architects to anyone setting out on a new project”.
